Coastal Cottage Exterior

Coastal Cottage South East Exterior

Garapa and Stainless Steel Deck & Railing

The cables between the railing posts are stainless steel, as are the tensioners that hold the end of the cable.   Building codes require a railing height of 36" and a maximum opening of 4" between balusters.  Using stainless steel cables allowed us to meet code and keep the views of the salt pond.  Ezra Baer designed and built the railings.

Kolbe Windows

We used Kolbe K-Force windows that came trimed with 3 1/2" flat casing.  The windows are made for coastal applications and designed to withstand hurricanes.  The double hung windows used in the first floor are cottage windows, meaning that the lower sash is larger than the upper sash.   This allows an unobstructed view when seated inside.

The exterior siding of the coastal cottage is red cedar clapboards and trim, and white cedar shingles.   We used finger-jointed clapboards and trim which means that each individual board is made up of many smaller pieces of wood.   Finger joining allows the manufacturer to use cut-offs and scraps of larger boards and finger jointed material is far less expensive than clear lumber.   The downside is that if the joints take in water the boards can be damaged.  The material we used came primed and that offered a degree of protection.  However, we reprimed everything, set the nails, filled the nail holes, caulked the seams, and painted the clapboards and trim with two coats of high quality exterior paint.  Patrick McCloskey did all the exterior surface preparation and painting.

The shingles are pre-stained white cedar and do not require any treatment.  The dark-reddish band around the top of the bottom is copper flashing which will weather and take on a green patina.  The roof is made of standing seam aluminum, fabricated on site.
